Here comes El Nino: It's early, likely to be big, sloppy and add even more heat to a warming world After months of gradually warming sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, NOAA officially issued an El Nino advisory Thursday and stated that this one might be different than the others. This El Nino started earlier than usual, which puts 2023 in the running for warmest year on record. Though the Atlantic hurricane season is typically quieter during these events, unusually warm waters in this region could challenge El Nino's dampening influence.

UN's weather agency: 2022 was nasty, deadly, costly and hot Looking back at 2022’s weather with months of analysis, the World Meteorological Organization says last year really was as bad as it seemed when people were muddling through it. The United Nations' climate agency in a Friday report says killer floods, droughts and heat waves hit around the world, costing many billions of dollars. Global ocean heat and acidity levels hit record highs and Antarctic sea ice and European Alps glaciers reached record low amounts. Last year was the fifth or sixth hottest depending on measuring techniques.

Study says warming may push more hurricanes toward US coasts A new study says changes in air patterns as the world warms will likely push more and nastier hurricanes up against the United States’ east and Gulf coasts. Friday's study looks more at steering currents of future storms than past research, focusing on where storms will go instead of how big or frequent they will be. The study projects that in the future extra warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific will ripple through the atmosphere to push storms in the Atlantic more eastward toward the Southeast Coast and north in the Gulf of Mexico.

The nation's weather chief and other experts say the U.S. gets hit by stronger, costlier, more varied and frequent extreme weather than anywhere on Earth. Those include tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, blizzards and the like. The reason is geography. Two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, mountains, the jet stream and jutting peninsulas all combine to brew up severe storms. But nasty weather by itself isn't a disaster. What makes nature's bad hand a disaster is humans.
