The health and economic impact of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has continuously grown over the past years, reaching an estimated peak of approximately 700 000 attributable deaths per year.

Neglected hygiene, poor compliance with infection control procedures, inappropriate antimicrobial use, and insufficient availability of diagnostics and new effective antibiotics have contributed to this inglorious global record.

Despite these alarming figures, infection prevention and treatment have not been considered top priorities on the agendas of most industrialised countries.

This mindset changed abruptly with the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The town of Crisfield was impacted heavily by Superstorm Sandy. Going into its second year after Sandy's landfall, only one third of the houses impacted in Crisfield (the most heavily impacted town on the Eastern Shore) have been restored. Infrastructure remains fragile and the economy, although temporarily improved to some degree by modest recovery funds, continues in a fragile state under long-term decline. Overall, Crisfield's population continues in a long-term decline after being the second most prosperous city in Maryland during the late 1800s and early 1900s, before its fisheries largely collapsed with the decline in the Chesapeake Bay's ecosystem.

f you walk along Manhattan's West Side Highway, upon the long strip of bike lanes and greenery between the Hudson River and the droning automobiles, you'll come to a fresh patch of pavement that's a stone's throw away from the Pier 51 Playground. You can't tell by the look of it, but beneath the new asphalt hundreds of millions of cubic feet-worth of natural gas are flowing.

While the national climate movement has focused on the transnational Keystone XL pipeline, this tiny site has been the object of a more-than-two-year local battle over the first natural gas pipeline to enter New York City in 40 years. Objecting to the high radon content of the fracked gas and the risk of explosion this pipeline carries, my friends and I waged a campaign of legal challenges and protests against its operator, Spectra Energy Corporation.
